今秋10月, Neverland员工Mary （小木）神秘"失踪", 当我们窥探其踪迹时,却发现她已出现在尼泊尔博卡拉的费瓦湖上, 泛着舟,拿着摄像机,眼前面对的却都是那些来自喜玛拉雅山脉8000米级别以上的神仙们,

羡慕别人的同时，忍不住在这里发一通的她的照片，让大家也一起饱饱眼福!

开篇：飞跃喜玛拉雅山

从中国出发前往尼泊尔, 建议乘做成都到加德满都,国航的那班飞机CA407,

因为它是目前直接飞跃喜玛拉雅山山脉的航班,在飞机上可以俯瞰这个世界屋脊的壮观场面.

在尼泊尔漂流:

很多人知道来尼泊尔是徒步,登山, 探访古镇, 其实:尼泊尔还有很棒漂流活动

以下的这条河是从加德满都谷地飘向博卡拉地区.全程漂流2天1晚, 费用约60美金/人

漂流下来后直接做车就可以去博卡拉

博卡拉这里实在是一个适合腐败的地方.每天住的便宜舒坦,吃的舒服

在路上逛的累了,可以到费瓦湖去泛舟,等到泛舟也累时,就干脆躺在船上就算是眯着眼睛也能让你看见那些喜玛山雪山群

徒步安娜普尔纳山脉:

好的风景自然要走进去才能看到,在博卡拉腐败的日子多了, 为了寻求精神上的满足,我们的Mary开始了她的安娜普尔纳山徒步之旅

完整的安娜普尔纳山徒步是一次地理跨度很大的经历.从山脚下的森林地貌开始,随着海拔的上升,植被不段的减少.最后经历高山荒漠带后,到达冰川脚下.

丛林徒步,

去奇旺的另一件事情就是丛林徒步, 有自己的双脚深入热带雨林中.至于能否看到狮子,老虎,犀牛,或是小兔子,松鼠,甚至是老鼠,全看各位的人品了

去奇旺的另一个乐趣就是入住小木屋, 据说入住这样的木屋里, 让人有产生一种猎人人狩猎般的感觉,奇旺的小木屋入住价格为:180美金/晚

 

最后一站:加德满都古城

这是最后一站,最古老,同时也是最耐人寻味的一站,尼泊尔浓郁的文化背景,古城里悠闲的艺人,那些兜售古董店的商人,这一切,都让你感觉到自己走在了中世纪中...

 

一些有关尼泊尔的背景:

尼泊尔是一个独立的王国,北部与中国西藏接壤,东,南,西三面与印度相邻.地势北高南低,北部横贯着喜玛拉雅山脉.

 

一般去尼泊尔建议走三个地方:

加德满都谷地-这是古建筑,人文背景也最多的地方.

博卡拉地区-来这里主要是看雪山的,或者徒步.亦或就烂在那里吃啊喝啊睡啊

奇旺-这里是尼泊尔的热带.来奇旺可以骑大象,住小木屋, 感受热带的风情.

 

关于尼泊尔签证:

尼泊尔签证可以在,北京,上海,拉萨三个地方办理.填写表格给护照,基本没有任何要求.

 

交通: 上海前往尼泊尔的航班可以有直飞但机票难定.建议如在成都转机可以做国行的飞机,中途飞跃喜玛拉雅山.

 

用餐和住宿:

尼泊尔的用餐和住宿条件都不错,价格也不贵.住宿只管往高的楼走,挑有阳台的,标房有洗澡一般就人民币30-40元.

A short recounting of my recent visit to the bustling City of Huhhot and the far-flung Grasslands of the Autonomous Region of Inner Mongolia with annotated pictorial accompaniment.  The airport in Huhhot is much like any other modern transportation facility, all glass and metal and high ceilinged, a cathedral for the faithful traveler.  It was night when I arrived and the city looked much like the other Chinese cities I have visited, a riot of neon, glass and concrete.  Wide streets bounded by modern buildings, construction sites and piles of trash and rubble.  I was staying at a Chinese business hotel in the city center right next to the Holiday Inn for probably 1/3 the price.  I found the room to be fine though the fact that the shower was just a curtain and a drain in the center of the floor was new to me. The next morning I got my first look at the city, very modern and bustling.  The air was clean and fresh and a big relief from the stifling summer heat of Shanghai.

Ah, the magic of the new China.

 

 

The population of Inner Mongolia has large numbers of Mongolian and other ethnic minorities mixed in with the Han majority.  Huhhot was historically a trading center and is also home to many of the Muslim Hui people who are sprinkled throughout China.    The beautiful Grand Mosque in Huhhot is one of China’s largest.

 

The city is also home to some nice Buddhist temples.  A small one, but perhaps my favorite, was the Wu Ta Si, Five Towers Temple, located very near the city center.  The temple building itself is covered in extensive carvings illustrating the life of Buddha and his disciples.

 

 

At the museum of the Inner Mongolia University we saw a Horsehead Fiddle that even made me look small.

 

One of my favorite pieces was a wonderful jade traveling chess set.  Since they were nomadic, following their herds of livestock to wherever the grass was green, the Mongols artifacts are generally small enough to fit in a shoulder bag.

 

Unlike the large cities where these pollution-belching babies have been eliminated, Huhhot still has the 3-wheeled mini-cabs from old China, maybe 10 years back.  Great fun for short bumpy rides

 

I was up in Huhot visiting my friend Jerry.  We play bluegrass music together in Shanghai.  Jerry’s a smart guy, he goes to visit his Mom in Mongolia for most of the Shanghai summer, I came along because I like the music and the food.  Here’s a picture of me and Jerry singing at a Mongol bar.  All Mongolian people sing, almost all anyway, and they loved having a laowai in their bar singing country music. Dig that crazy guitar!!

 

 

Another nice spot in the city was Da Zhao, a big temple that they are in the process of making even bigger.  It’s your classic Buddhist temple but it seemed that the monks have not yet arrived in force.  There is lots of construction and finish work going on. I was lucky enough to see some of the beautiful colorful Buddhas being repainted by local craftspeople.

 

 

The fresh paint and gilding gives this temple a really nice brand new feeling.

 

The next day we headed out over the mountains on a nice modern highway for our two-hour drive to the grasslands, cao yuan.

 

After our short drive we came to the rolling grasslands of Inner Mongolia.

 

A beautiful calming expanse of green, white and blue, with a fresh, strong, sweet breeze calling forth deep feelings of oneness with nature and harmony with the earth.

The signs of human habitation are integrated with the environment and almost become part of the physical surroundings.

Our first stop was a really cool small temple built for one of the Qing Dynasty emperors who would escape the summer heat of Beijing in the cool of the grasslands.  This temple was lovingly maintained by local monks and the people and seemed to more of a working place of worship than the temples in the city.  The tranquility of this place with clouds of swallows darting out for insects from under the eaves and the pungent smell of the incense was well appreciated after the hectic pace in Huhhot.

 

Our next stop was at a champa high on a hill.  The sky and land spread out all around as the wind whistled through the hadas left as a blessing left by the faithful.

 

 

 

After circling the champa 3 times counterclockwise I had to get out our guitar and play a tune as an offering.

 

 

Next we headed down to a gathering of yurts, mungo bao, for some food and drink and good friendly conversation.

Inside the yurt is a very comfortable space with a spinning table; I think that’s for us foreigners, to make it easy to grab some of the delicious sheep dishes that are served.

Of course the food is great but you have to have some baijiu, Mongol vodka, 120 proof!!

 

Be sure you hire musicians for your feast for the beautiful singing and playing and the ceremonial toasts of baijiu.

 

 

The music was fantastic, the lady was a great singer and I love the sound of the morihuur, a sound made for the peaceful space of the grasslands.

 

 

 

 

Of course you must have some more baijiu. As far as I was concerned keep it comin’.

 

After enough of the baijiu I picked up the guitar and played and sang for the musicians and my new found friends.  The horse head fiddle player joined in on a song and sounded great.  My friend Jerry told me it was unusual for the locals to play with outsiders.  It was an honor that I won’t forget.  There is a snippet of us playing up on YouTube at;

At a museum in Huhhot we had seen a fiddle made from bone and horn.

 

 

After our delicious meal, just enough baijiu and a short nap, it was time to leave the yurt and hit the W.C.

 

 

Baijiu affects different people differently.  It was Jun’s birthday and his friends cajoled him into drinking a bit too much.  I’m in the background chattin’ up the ladies in my minimal Chinese.

 

 

Our last stop on the grasslands was Swan Lake, a beautiful spot that’s a vernal lake for just a few months in the spring and summer. It was a really nice way to end a great day spent exploring Mongolian culture, cuisine and the beautiful peaceful countryside

 

Jun decided to go for a wade.  It’s probably not too much deeper than that all the way across. 

 

My trip to Huhhot and the grasslands was an amazing adventure.  I had a great time discovering someplace I’d never imagined I’d ever go.  The whole week I was there I saw less than ten foreigners.  I was lucky to know someone from the area and that helped me get an up close introduction the life he and his friends live in this far off place, but everything I’ve shown here is easily accessible to any seasoned traveler, well maybe not the singin’ in a Mongol bar part.  You should know a bit of Chinese just to get by, a good phrase book will help, and in some places the conditions and facilities can be a bit rough. But if you go with respect you’ll find the locals are totally stoked to find someone from the West in their part of the world enjoying themselves and learning about their culture.  Plus it’s a great getaway from the muggy summer of Shanghai or Beijing.  Me, I’m going back for more baijiu and Mongolian music.

Last weekend, our friends Kim, Mike and michelle travelled with Neverland to Mogan Mountain. We had a two days soft hiking, which was quite relaxing. This six hours hike took us through bamboo forest, tea plantation and traditional village. Of course, we didn’t miss the cold local beer. And the mountain flavor meals, Mogan VIP villa also impressed us greatly !

众神保佑的都在尼泊尔

从拉萨到加德满都的航行是绝美的航行，若缺了这次航行，尼泊尔之行的魅力要逊色一半。

仿佛在太空中，仿佛在地表上缓步爬行，黄土、沟壑、雪山、高峰，还有珠穆朗玛峰顶上的屡屡白烟。十几分钟围绕着喜马拉雅山脉转了一个大圈，阳光撒在茫茫的雪山上烁烁发光，飞机很快传出就要降落加德满都的声音。过了一会儿，我发现飞机不断地在原地打圈，烟雾很厚，有一度飞机完全淹没在白色的云雾里，心一阵踌躇，不会有什么问题吧！

终于在某个瞬间，飞机冲了出去，把云雾甩在身后，这是一幅壮观的景象：我再度发现太阳正以它的所有光辉在一片不可改变的天空中发着光。忽然，我感觉到一种从未有过的喜悦，仿佛触摸到了真理之光，感受到了真相！我被净化了，从一些外来的遮蔽我们深层本性的幕中被净化了。成佛的道路大概就与此相似吧！

 

 

加都第一面！

 

从机场里走出去，心凉了大半截，城市灰灰的，都是些矮矮的红色房子，同行的旅友都是第一次来，被一个黄牛带到最近的一家餐馆吃中饭，蚊虫乱舞，厨娘黑糊糊的手上下忙碌，抓出一块一块的咖喱土豆、硬邦邦的饭（号称“刀巴”），门外是几个在地上洗碗和洗衣服的女人，以及一尊佛像和几个念念有词的男人，饿，但不敢吃。但是，饥饿终于战胜了眼睛的抵抗，开始狼吞虎咽起来。

吃好饭穿过一堆堆沙包和武装警察守卫的古城门，回到机场，等待去博卡拉的飞机。飞机晚点2小时，是一家17人座的小飞机，我坐在机尾，等飞机关上门的一瞬间，我立刻掏出手机，给在家里的老公发了条消息：“我买的美亚保险的卡号是××，有事请打电话××。”飞机航行只有25分钟，驾驶室的门敞开着，眼看着2个驾驶员说说笑笑，我的心悬了25分钟，以至于飞机下面的动态的尼泊尔地图在眼里都不那么让人兴奋了。

飞机终于降落在博卡拉机场，一下飞机正好是夕阳西下，空气里湿漉漉的，干净得仿佛海边的城市，立刻开心起来，这一天是大年三十，我终于来到了喜马拉雅西麓的山脚下！

饕餮之后，第二天我们开始trekking（徒步），我一直走在最前面，一点也不累，晚上住在一家小旅馆，正对着8000多米的安娜普纳山和鱼尾峰，夕阳撒在雪山上，那种通体金黄的山脉，真的一阵阵涌现起神圣的宗教感。

生活是艰苦的，厚而脏的被子压得难受，标房是5元人民币，没水，只能和衣睡去，屋外是雪山和狗的叫声。第二天凌晨起来看日出，云彩把太阳撕成一片片的红色和金色。早饭后继续上路，开始见到雪，我的跑步鞋明显使不上力，底太滑，下坡很危险，我拉在了最后，幸好还有Eric。

说起Eric，煞是好玩。前一天领队在旅行社找挑夫的时候，他在旁边要求跟着领队走，自称是美国《Outside》杂志的记者，在写挑夫的生活。领队当场拒绝，天晓得他按的什么心，没想到领队回到旅馆时他居然不知不觉地跟过来了，他说他真的想体验挑夫的生活，希望我们带上他。我们同行是2个男孩，6个女孩，女孩都建议留下他，也有人担心他是“断背”，但又能怎样呢？结果就留下他了。

徒步的时候，他的头上也绑着绳子，绳子上套着竹篮，竹篮里是3位挑夫的行李，他边走边不时地掏出笔记本写些东西，在崎岖不平的山路上还走得飞快，有些中国游客在路过时就问我们：“你们请的老外挑夫多少钱啊？”Eric每天一直陪伴在挑夫左右，他竹篮里的东西越来越重，因为他看挑夫累了就帮他们分担掉更多的东西，第5天去看日出的早晨，他脱下唯一的羽绒服硬是要一位年老的挑夫穿上，情形甚为感人。我的跑步鞋在雪地里行走时进雪了，不小心把鞋子踢到远处，Eric飞奔过去把鞋子拿回来，一定要跟我穿上，弄得我不好意思、又感动万分。徒步实在是对体力和意志的极大挑战。第三天的时候，我已经筋疲力尽，可能衣服穿少了，越走越冷，膝盖以下部分全部湿透，快要僵掉的人硬撑着走到住处的时候，眼泪大滴大滴地掉下来，喘不过气，后来呕吐不止，一阵晕眩，同伴们连拖带拽把我弄到床上，我感觉自己已经快到极限了，一句话也说不出，眼睛也睁不开。极度虚弱的我第二天继续上路，在深过膝盖的雪地里继续前行，感觉喘不上气，但还是要坚持！身边六七十岁的日本老头老太团都坚持在走，我有什么理由放弃！沈巍是我所见到的最好的领队，幽默又细心，帮我背着包，不断鼓励我：“你一定行！”

通过这次徒步，我发现自己是个很有毅力的人，不管天多冷多黑，闹钟一响立刻起床，走到极累时还会不断向前。在上海时，老公太宠我了，结婚以后，我感觉仿佛在重新过一个童年。记得朋友的小说里有一句话：“哪怕有一天我富比恺撒，也不愿用此交换一个美好的童年。”不能让老公知道，否则他会心疼坏的。事实上，进山的5田里——大年初一到初五，他没接到我的任何音讯，担忧坏了。

下山的那一天，每个人都如狼似虎，仿佛终于要逃出山区，进城啦！没想到博卡拉城里传来罢工的消息，我们中的一半人坚持要当天晚上回到城里——他们去路口等了半天，找来2辆黑车，价钱是出发时候的8倍！路上被警察抑或毛派拦下来，传出恐怖的警报声，不会是打仗了吧，大家赶忙关掉手机、屏住呼吸。虚惊一场，回到城里，脱下臭烘烘的衣服饕餮。

博卡拉的空气是闲适的，商店、酒吧一家连着一家，旁边就是费娃湖，这次出来玩不带老公实在是失策，因为没人发嗲是浪漫不起来的：）以至于我没有心情跟同伴们去画船和看夕阳。

旅途中的背夫

 

尼泊尔人似乎大多无所事事，不管在神庙的门口，还是街道上，男男女女、老老少少都站着或坐着发呆，眼神迷惘。一大清早就起来发呆，还不如回屋睡觉去呢，但发呆于他们是常态，没什么大惊小怪的，若不是发呆的话，就是边走边念念叨叨地做一些祈祷的仪式，即使是出租司机也边开车边摸摸胸前和太阳穴，不知道在跟哪位神灵对话。整个尼泊尔的气味和色彩一样丰富，神庙面前摆满了花花绿绿的献给神灵的鲜花，但同时臭气冲天、让人想逃——地上满是垃圾，时不时还会看到死老鼠。减缓呼吸的速度徐徐向前，告诉自己，这里是个宗教的国度，探索一下，再探索一下，时间之神究竟施了何种魔法，让它定格在前现代的节点上，看不到进步的痕迹，老百姓是在什么力量的感召下自得其乐的。

法国著名哲学家让－弗朗索瓦·勒维尔跟他的儿子——后来皈依藏传佛教的儿子马蒂厄·里卡尔在加德满都郊区的山脚下进行了一年多的谈话，他们谈到了加德满都非常闻名并且非常令人遗憾的肮脏，父亲认为各种外在的痛苦、堕落、以及残酷的生理不幸在尼泊尔存在并且不断增长。而儿子认为不能做这些过于匆忙的判断。

马蒂厄认为，和许多东方城市一样，加德满都正遭受着一种无政府状态的扩散，这种扩散一方面是由于与飞速发展的人口相联系的农村的日益贫困化，另一方面则是由于那种——当然常常是受欺骗的——对于在城市中更好生活的希望。印度或尼泊尔的贫困固然理所当然地震撼我们的感觉，但是在作这种总之是相当平庸的证明的同时，人们常常极有可能对于近五十年来取得的进步一无所知。不应该忘记，西方同胞所享受的社会成果是一种近期的现象，它开端于两次世界大战之间。对于像尼泊尔和印度一样贫穷的国家，要让这样代价高昂的社会福利在不久的将来被推广到正以惊人节奏增长的全部人口中，是不可设想的。这些国家根本就没有能够这样做的财源。巴黎和伦敦在路易十四统治的时代简直就是垃圾堆，但是精神性也同样不是应受指责的。我不认为佛教忽视了实用的治疗方法，而是由于地理、气候和人口的条件，在东方，要对更为巨大的贫困进行斗争。

同行不少中国游客感慨，尼泊尔跟中国三四年前的那场运动非常相似，路口成堆的沙包、随处可见的穿着制服的游击队员……当地人抱怨说，他们痛恨政治，三天两头的罢工给我们的行程添了不少麻烦，每次罢工都让我们费很大劲找来黑车、被狠狠地宰一刀，并且在路上车子还会被随意拦下，听到警报声的时候大家屏住呼吸、惴惴不安，当然据说尼泊尔人不管在和平时期还是战争时期从不伤害游人。

 

 

 

 

 

 

在纳伽阔特看喜马拉雅

 

尼泊尔半个多月的旅行中，最心旷神怡的莫过于纳伽阔特（Nagarkot）了。从加德满都一路上山，雾气氤氲，到了山顶的Country Villa住下，每晚40美金的标房是最奢侈的一晚了，先前住在山上是标房基本上不会超过5元人民币！

第二天醒来，躺在床上就能看连绵的雪山和日出。坐在山上用早餐，看着山下绿色的梯田，体验云卷云舒，20多座雪山在面前逶迤排开，其中包括珠穆朗玛峰等6座8000米以上的雪山，你回感觉到了另外一个世界，没有尘世的纷扰，只剩下一颗赤子之心。

圣洁的雪山和丰饶的梯田，脑子里浮现出葛优在《不见不散》里的话：“由于印度洋暖湿气流的影响，尼泊尔王国温暖湿润，四季如春，而山的北麓由于寒冷则终年积雪，如果沿着山腰打开一条通路，将湿气引到山的这一边来，那中国的青藏高原该会变成多少鱼米之乡啊！”

Moganshan is a compact hilltop. You can walk everywhere, from one sight to the next, and always find something interesting in between, be it a quaintly rundown old villa, a stunning view or simply a picturesque path to explore. The hillside is crisscrossed with numerous stone walkways and steps, some in very good repair, some sadly neglected. (The latter can be the best fun to explore.) Pagodas are scattered through the woods like sofas in an art gallery, perfect places to rest your legs and take in the vista.

You can ‘do’ Moganshan, in a rush, in a day. But much of its charm will be missed. Best take at least two days, even better three, to wander the old houses and museums at leisure, and still have time for a short hike into the surrounding countryside. And don’t forget to leave time for settling down with a good book in a pagoda, on a terrace…or, of course, back at the Lodge.

Note: for the official sights, museums etc. you must show your entry ticket, the one you bought for RMB 80 at the gate as you came in. If you somehow sneaked in without buying one, then the guardians will ask you to buy one on the spot.

Museums and Historic Buildings

The Mao Museum

Signposted from the start of the back road, just down from Yin Shan Jie, the Mao Museum is an empty shell. Painted floors, white walls, no furnishings, except for an iron bedstead, where Mao reputedly slept overnight. He did not. He came up for a day, with an old comrade who happened to live at the foot of the mountain, and during his walkabout had an afternoon nap in this house.

White Cloud Castle

Once the residence of a Kuomintang foreign minister, Huang Fu, this house in the Baiyun Hotel complex is the one where Chiang Kai Shek spent a few days on his honeymoon with Song Mei Ling, in 1927. Ten years later Chiang returned here to meet Zhou Enlai. They discussed how the Kuomintang and the Communists might co-operate against the Japanese. The museum is pretty Spartan in its artifacts, but compared to the Mao museum, it is positively cluttered. The walls of the ground floor display grainy black and white photographs of Zhou and Chiang, notably more of Zhou. There is a roped off study where “meetings were held” and a dining room where Zhou and Chiang “ate their meals”, and a bedroom where “they slept”… you get the idea. But at least there is some furniture, and house is pleasantly laid out.

Wulingcun

This spur of the mountain, originally named Mt Clare by the foreigners, was the site of some of the earliest houses in the very late 1800s. On the north side of the entrance to the Moganshan Shanzhuang is a gully which sucks up a constant draft. The prime plot, in those days before air conditioning, was right at the top of it, where the Moganshan Shanzhuang now sits. Of the buildings now scattered across the flat top of the spur, Number 550, the Songyue Ting, was the scene of Chiang Kai Shek’s last visit to and meeting on the mountain, to launch a new paper currency for China, in 1948.

 Scenic Spots

The Sword Pond, Jian Chi

Rightly billed as the main tourist attraction of Moganshan – it is after all the reason the place got its name – the Sword Pond is set in a beautiful gully, lined with green trees and imposing rocks, and well worth the descent from the road and climb back up again. In the off season it really does feel like a fairy glen. In the high season on the other hand, there are crowds of tourists and local touts offering you rides on sedan chairs etc. Do not let that put you off. The local administration bureau has done a remarkably good job of building walkways, wooden pagodas and viewing points. You can always find a quiet spot to enjoy the serene beauty of the place, you’ll just have to look for it a little harder sometimes.

Luhuadang Gongyuan (Reed Catkin Marsh Park)

Why one had to lay out a park in the middle of such beautiful and natural surroundings, only a stuffy Victorian would know. But lay out a park they did, as if the only way to enjoy nature was to impose one’s own version on top of it. Reed Catkin Marsh Park leads up from the Administration Bureau Office Car Park (where all the sedan chair carriers hang out) up to the Baiyun Hotel. Where the foreigners stuck their gazebos, the new generation has put tiny pagodas. And sculptures are scattered among the small grassy clearings in the shrubbery. For all the manufactured greenery, it is actually quite a pleasant little park. At least there is no funfair in the middle of it.

Qingliang Ting

You pass this pagoda on your way up the steep road from Yucun, just as you enter the village proper. So it’s a long hike by foot back down, unless you are staying at the Radisson’s Du Yue Sheng Villa, right beside it. Views down to the plain and across the hillside are spectacular, on clear days. On misty ones you could almost imagine, if you try really hard, that you are on the top of Huang Shan, thanks to the rocky cliffs.

Guai Shi Jiao “Weird Rock Corner”

At the end of a spur that leads off west from the top of the mountain, past Ta Shan, its highest point, Guai Si Jiao is a pleasant walk along the ridge (detour to the tea plantation if you’re thirsty, see Qingcaotang below). The place is signposted from the ridge road. If you can’t read Chinese look for the mocked up photograph of weird stones. You can’t miss it. Views are impressive, if plain. All you can see is green hills stretching into the distance. The rocks themselves are certainly pretty weird. Great photo opportunities. Look down to the left and you’ll see four tall but dead-looking pine trees poking out of the bamboo. They surround an old tomb. Take the steps down for a look. They start from the left of the small pagoda. (for more about where the steps lead, go to Roundabout Moganshan).

Dripping Green Pond

… does not drip so much as gently stagnate. So it is green at least. However, it is cleaned up regularly and if you slip your visit in between the coach loads of tourists who stop here on their way up to Wulingcun, you will probably enjoy a few moments of green peace. Do spend a moment to read the description on the board. If you are French perhaps you could get in touch please and explain how one quantifies “bonjour”.

Qingcaotang (Green Grass Soup) Tea Plantation

Just below the “Weird Rock Corner”, on its south side, Qingcaotang Tea Plantation is the only local one above 700 metres in elevation. This apparently adds flavour. It also adds value. When the new leaves are in season and just being picked, a pound of the finest blend will set you back RMB 500. But it is delicious. The fourth soaking is when the flavour really kicks in. The affable manager, Mr. Pan, is happy to show you around, demonstrate the process of making tea, and will even let you have a go, for a nominal fee. He can also lay on a rural lunch in the ramshackle but charming old villa for guests.

…Or just wander aimlessly

Moganshan is crisscrossed with a maze of stone pathways and steps. Some follow the contours of the hill, some climb vertically and at times precariously to secret viewpoints. You might stumble on a run down derelict villa, inhabited only by ghosts of the past, or a tumbledown still lived in by aged locals who still remember those ghosts. One old man we know recalls seeing Chiang Kai Shek up here. See if you can find the remains of the old public tennis courts, the weed-covered ruins of Moganshan’s first hotel built in the 1920’s, the Luyin Luguan, also known as the Railway Hotel. (No, there was no mountain railway). At every corner you will find a house with history. You do not need a guidebook, you can make the stories up yourselves. Much more fun.

Some specific places to try to stumble on:

The Assembly Hall. Halfway along Ridge Road, the old Assembly Hall, built in 1923, housed the Summer Resort Association meeting rooms, a kindergarten, concert hall and on the second floor the village church. Today it is a carpentry store and workshop. If the workers are inside you can ask to be let in for a look see. Without the dividing floor the place really does feel like a cathedral. Before a workshop, it was used to grow mushrooms, which somehow spontaneously combusted in 1999 and burnt the place down. Hence the new stonework visible on the walls.

The Tennis Courts. Right beside the Assembly Hall, the tennis courts are covered with short bamboo and weeds. But the stone foundation of what was the main spectator pagoda still stands. The other viewing terraces up the side of the hill have become the retaining wall for a large water tank. The pleasant avenue of trees is a post ’49 addition. They run right through the old courts.

The Swimming Pool. Just up from Yin Shan Jie, the village street, opposite the Post Office, the swimming pool is still full of water, not that you’d want to swim in it. The original poolside buildings have been replaced a couple of times. In 1922 the pool and buildings were swept away by a landslide. One missionary was killed while a young boy, who survived, ended up in the wreckage of the ladies’ changing room. Must have been traumatic.

Baotai Shan. The “Gun Platform” which never had a gun emplacement. What looks like the foundation of an old fortification is in fact the ruins of the mountain’s first hotel, Luyin Luguan, also known as the Railway Hotel. Turn off the back road down the mountain about halfway to the Zhu Xiang Cun Hotel.

. . Food and Drink

Fresh coffee, genuine British breakfasts, home baked cakes, simple lunches, slap up dinners and of course alcohol, including a Shanghai class wine list.

Produce is locally sourced or homemade (the bacon is cured by us from the excellent local pork), and we try to avoid waste so dinners for example are cooked to order. The idea is that you drop by during your stay, glance over the simple dinner menu and order in advance – preferably 24 hours (alternatively email “ahead” to info@moganshanlodge.com and we’ll send you the menu). We then buy in the ingredients from the local market and you all eat the same meal. Ideal for families and groups of friends with similar tastes. The simple lunches – pasta, salads or burgers – can be knocked up in minutes.

The aim of the Lodge is to be a warm and friendly place where you can make yourself at home. If Dad wants to carve the roast or Mum wants to dish out the stew herself, they are welcome to. The Boeuf Bourguignonne by the way, has been favourably compared to M on the Bund’s, but that compliment was given by the chef’s wife, the manager.

. . . Books, Games and DVDs

We have a decent sized library and collection of games for rainy days inside or fine evenings on the terrace. You are welcome to borrow books and some are for sale. We also have a vast collection of DVDs, all legitimately purchased of course, and shown for free should a quorum be reached by the majority of the guests of an evening. No satellite TV or sports we regret, not that we really want to become a “Sports Bar.”. It will be a while before we can draw the crowds from Shanghai’s Big Bamboo or O’Malley’s. You are welcome to bring your own (legitimate, ahem) DVDs and settle on the sofas to watch them too. The TV area can be curtained off from the rest of the bar.

. . . Directions, tours, hikes – and maybe bikes

The management of the Lodge have lived in Moganshan for three years. We know the place fairly well, and also the surrounding area. We’re very happy to give impromptu history lectures over a cup of coffee, point you in the right direction for a tour of the village, or even take you on one if things are quiet. We are working on getting some decent maps of the area but in the meantime can give directions for some great hikes (we’ll supply a packed lunch too if you like). Since the start of any long walk starts from the top of the mountain, and, ergo, finishes there too, we can arrange pick up for those who prefer to skip the long trudge back up the way you went down in the morning.

We are also working on the idea of mountain bikes for hire. Only one available at the moment, by special arrangement, you can guess whose that one is. There is fantastic mountain biking to be had in the area.

Hiking the Glory of Great Wall

Hiking background

This section of Great Wall was first constructed during the period of the Ming Dynasty, about 600 years ago. As one of the frontier passes close to Beijing, large garrisons of troops were stationed at there.

 

Throughout the Ming and Qing dynasties. During that period, This part of great wall was the headquarters of the stationed troops. As one might expect of such a militarily important pass, The great wall has been the backdrop to many important battles. The Great Wall runs from north to south, crossing the River, climbing up to a high mountain, then descending again, punctuated by beacon-towers and guard-towers.
